Note to students

Before using artificial intelligence (AI) tools for assignments you should check with the instructor of the course to see if using AI is permitted.

If you are permitted to use AI, you should:

  • Evaluate the output. Content produced by AI tools may contain inaccurate, unreliable, and/or biased information.
  • Cite the information used. APA Style has an example for citing AI tools.

In addition to the caveats above, know that AI tools may infringe on your privacy by collecting your data, and infringe on others' intellectual property rights by using their content without permission or attribution. Remember that you are still responsible for the content of your assignments, regardless of what tools you use.

Definitions

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the theory and development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks which normally require human intelligence such as, visual perception, speech recognition, learning, decision-making, and natural language processing (IEEE-USA, 2017).

What is Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI or GenAI)?

Generative AI refers to AI techniques that learn a representation of artifacts from data, and use it to generate brand-new, unique artifacts that resemble but don’t repeat the original data (Gartner, n.d.). ChatGPT and Copilot are examples of GAI.

What is a Large Language Model (LLM)?

Large language models form the foundation for GAI systems (Ruiz & Fusco, 2024). They learn from large amounts of text and generate new text in a human-like fashion (Tam, 2023).
